Tai Wo Hau· A good place to go on weekends

The historical background and development of Tai Wo Hau Village

Tai Wo Hau, Hong Kong is an area located in Kwai Tsing District, New Territories, with a history dating back to after World War II. At that time, a large number of refugees from mainland China poured into Hong Kong. In order to resettle these homeless people, the government built a series of resettlement buildings in the Tai Wo Hau area. These buildings originally adopted the design of Type II resettlement buildings and were named after English letters. Later, in 1966, the government built an additional building using the Type IV resettlement building design, with numbers as the seat numbers.

Over time, Tai Wo Hau Estate gradually developed into a mature public housing estate. Beginning in 1977, the Housing Authority decided to carry out a comprehensive redevelopment project in Tai Wo Hau Estate. All the original Type II resettlement buildings were demolished and replaced by a series of new buildings, which were successively occupied from 1979 to 1993. These newly built buildings are named after the word "rich", such as Fuxiu Building, Fuping Building, etc. Block 20 of the Type IV Resettlement Building is named "Fu Fu Building".

Today, Tai Wo Hau Estate has become a densely populated public housing estate with a total population of approximately 19,800 people. In addition to Tai Wo Hau Estate itself, this area also includes other public housing projects such as Kwai Yin Court and Kwai Yung Court. Kwai Yin Court is a home ownership housing estate completed in 1993; Kwai Wing Court was originally a home ownership housing project but was later converted into government quarters.

In general, Tai Wo Hau is a well-developed public housing estate with a long history, providing Hong Kong citizens with a high-quality living environment and supporting facilities. Its construction and reconstruction process has also witnessed the evolution of Hong Kong's public housing policy and is an important microcosm of Hong Kong's social development history.

Tsing Yi· A good place to go on weekends

The geographical location and historical background of Tsing Yi Island

Tsing Yi Island in Hong Kong is located in the southwest of the New Territories and is the fifth largest island in Hong Kong. Tsing Yi Island covers an area of approximately 10.69 square kilometers and has a maximum altitude of 334 meters. Tsing Yi Island was originally connected by reclamation from three islands: Tsing Yi Main Island, Nga Ying Chau and Chau Tsai.

Tsing Yi Island was officially taken over by the British on July 1, 1898. In the early days of British rule in Hong Kong, Tsing Yi Island belonged to Sai Island Cave. In 1906, the Hong Kong government established the Government Office in the New Territories, and Tsing Yi Island was included in the Southern Treaty. During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong from 1941 to 1945, Tsing Yi Island was included in the Kowloon area along with Tsuen Wan District. After the British took back Hong Kong, Tsing Yi Island was once again included in the Southern Treaty. In 1956, Tsing Yi Island was separated from Tsuen Wan District.

In 1977, the Hong Kong government established Hong Kong's first "District Advisory Committee" in Tsuen Wan, which is part of Tsing Yi Island. On April 1, 1985, Tsing Yi Island and Kwai Chung were separated from Tsuen Wan District and the Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi District Council was established. In 1986, the Regional Municipal Council was established and Tsing Yi Island was included in its jurisdiction.

Since the 1970s, Tsing Yi Island has experienced new town development. Today, Tsing Yi Island has become a large residential area with complete cultural and recreational facilities, recreational and sports facilities, large shopping malls, primary and secondary schools and colleges and universities. Tsing Yi Island has a number of important infrastructure facilities, including oil depots, shipyards and shipyards. In the early 1990s, with the launch of the Airport Core Plan, important transportation infrastructure such as the Lantau Link, Airport Railway, Ting Kau Bridge, and Stonecutters Bridge were built on Tsing Yi Island. Container Terminal No. 9 was built on the southeast side of Tsing Yi Island, making Tsing Yi the petroleum storage center, heavy industry center and important transportation hub in Hong Kong.

The development of new towns in Tsing Yi Island is mainly concentrated in the northeast and is part of the Tsuen Wan New Town. Since Tsing Yi is separated from Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung by the Rambler Channel, and the MTR Tung Chung Line and Airport Express have stations in Tsing Yi, residents of Tsing Yi can travel directly to and from the urban areas of Hong Kong and Kowloon without passing through the urban areas of Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung. Tsing Yi Island has an established "city center" with facilities such as Tsing Yi Park, Tsing Yi Municipal Services Building, Tsing Yi Sports Ground and Tsing Yi Swimming Pool, allowing Tsing Yi residents to be self-sufficient on the island.
